Welcome to Year 1!

 

We are very lucky to have lots of staff to support our learning in Year 1 - Miss Date & Mrs Wadie are teachers in Koala class, and Miss Chester & Miss Hatton in Wallaby.

 

As children move into Year 1 we continue with lots of Independent Learning time while adults work with focused groups and individuals but begin to transition to a more formal whole class learning as the year progresses.

 

In the summer term we complete statutory Phonics Screening assessments where the children’s phonics knowledge and application are put to the test. We will hold a meeting to give parents more information on this during the spring term and materials will be available for practising at home. On Fridays, we will send home an outline of the phonics learning each week, including new sounds and tricky words learnt. Please discuss these with your children.

 

Children will continue to work through our book band reading system and will change their reading books weekly. We ask that books, tricky word cards and reading diaries remain in school bags so that adults can read with children at any time during the school week. We encourage children to read with you daily at home and record in their logs - practise makes perfect!

 

PE days are on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Children can come into school in their PE kits and must have any earrings removed at home in the morning.
